World War 1
WW1, commonly known at the time as the “Great War”, started in 1914 and ended in 1918, just over 100 years ago.
It is among the deadliest conflicts in human history, with a total of about 40 MILLION casualties – roughly 20 million deaths and another 20 million wounded. Almost the same number of civilians and soldiers were killed.
At the time, it was thought to be ‘the war to end all wars’.
